The false trevally or White fish, Lactarius lactarius, not to be confused with the milk-cap mushroom genus Lactarius, is species of fish in the family Lactariidae, currently the sole member of the family. Silvery grey with blue iridescence dorsally, silvery white ventrally; upper part of gill cover with a dusky black spot; fins pale yellow. Mouth large and oblique.

The colour of the Malabar trevally is usually a silver overlain by a bluish-grey hue on the upper side of the fish fading to a silvery-white on the underside and lower flanks.
