Aurigequula fasciata, the striped ponyfish, is a species of ponyfish native to the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean where it occurs in coastal marine and brackish waters. It occurs at depths of from 20 to 50 metres. This species is the only known member of its genus can be used in the preparation of mullan thilappichath with vinegar. Ponyfishes are small and laterally compressed in shape, with a bland, silvery colouration. They are distinguished by highly extensible mouths, and the presence of a mechanism for locking the spines in the dorsal and anal fins. They also possess a highly integrated light organ in their throats that houses symbiotic bioluminescent bacteria that project light through the animal's underside. Although ponyfish seem quite ordinary and morphologically similar, their light organ systems are highly variable across species and often between sexes. Pony Fish can grow to 11 inches with no scales. Pony Fish flesh is medium in flavor and stays firm when cooked. It is very bony, but the bones are mostly fused together at the fin margins so it is not real hard to eat. At Mathafresh, we process this fish by cutting off the head behind the collar and remove all fins.
